Kasper Andersen leads a research group at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Aarhus University studying the signalling mechanisms that permit plants to accommodate symbiotic microorganisms. His team is investigating how pattern-recognition receptors initiate intracellular signalling that allows microbes to infect and colonise plant roots. The goal is to understand how plants and microbes communicate and uncover the downstream signalling pathways and sequence of events enabling legume-bacteria symbiosis using structural biology, biochemistry and genetic approaches. This work will help guide a more structurally informed approaches to engineer nitrogen-fixing symbiosis into cereals.
